Tenants and owners
Storm and Cyclone Season
In North Queensland the cyclone season runs from November to April, and severe storms reach the Sunshine Coast too. A little preparation now protects the home, your belongings and everyone's safety.
For tenants: before a storm
- Tidy the yard. Put away or tie down anything that could blow around: outdoor furniture, bins, pot plants, toys and trampolines.
- Tell us about hazards early. If something could become dangerous in a storm, such as loose roof sheeting or a damaged fence, report it online now rather than after the weather turns.
- Know your plan. Check your evacuation zone and make a household plan with Get Ready Queensland and your council's disaster dashboard (Townsville, Sunshine Coast).
- Check your contents insurance. The owner's insurance covers the building, not your belongings.
- Pack an emergency kit with water, food, a torch, a battery radio, medicines and copies of important documents.
During a storm
- Follow the official warnings from the Bureau of Meteorology and your council.
- In a life-threatening emergency, call Triple Zero (000).
- For help with storm damage, such as a damaged roof or fallen tree, call the SES on 132 500.
After a storm
- Make sure everyone is safe before you look at any damage.
- Take photos of any damage to the property.
- Report the damage to us as soon as it is safe. Storm damage that makes the home unsafe or insecure is an emergency repair.
- The Residential Tenancies Authority has step-by-step guides for tenants and owners after a natural disaster.
For owners
- Check your landlord insurance is current and covers storm and cyclone damage.
- Get ahead of maintenance. Overhanging branches, blocked gutters and loose fittings are cheaper to fix before the season than after a storm. Ask us and we'll arrange a tradesperson.
- If your property is damaged, we'll let you know and help arrange the repairs.
